The P-51D Mustang was used by the A.A.F. in both the European and Pacific theatres. It undertook the first land-based fighter strikes against Tokyo on April 7, 1945. High altitude escort and combat were the Mustang's forte. It possessed a marked advantage in speed and manoeuvrability over all Luftwaffe piston- engined fighters above 20,000 ft.
Type: Single-seat Intercepter Long-range Escort Fighter and Fighter Bomber.
Power Plant: One 1,695 h.p. Packard V-1650-7 Merlin twelve cylinder Vee liquid-cooled engine.
Armament: Six 0.5 in. Browning MG 53-2 machine guns with (outboard and centre pairs) 270 r.p.g. and (inboard pair) 400 r.p.g. (or four 0.5 in. guns with 400 r.p.g.)
Performance: Maximum speed 395 m.p.h. at 5,000 ft. to 437 m.p.h. at 25,000 ft. Range (clean) 950 mls. at 395 m.p.h. at 25,000 ft. Time to 5,000 ft. 1.7 mins. To 20,000 ft. 7.3 mins. Service ceiling 41,900 ft.
